As mentioned in a previous post, a misconception of mesotherapy treatments is about fats dissolving away. Whether this is truly a valid misconception is perhaps subject to debate.
According to an article in Australian Cosmetic Surgery magazine, it talks about mesotherapy's "ability to melt away fat".
The article also mentions Dr. Patricia Rittes from Brazil. Dr. Rittes coined the term "Lipodissolve" for a mesotherapy treatment procedure which she uses.
In the Lipodissolve procedure, a solution of phosphatidyl choline (i.e. soy lecithin) and sodium deoxycholate is injected into the fatty area under the skin. The reaction that follows will result in inflammation and subsequent destruction of the fat. The broken-down fat is then absorbed by the bloodstream. Hence, fat actually dissolves away!
Should we then concede that certain forms of mesotherapy treatments do actually dissolve fat?

Mesotherapy treatments were developed in the 1950's in France.
Dr. Michel Pistor, a clinical research doctor, started the field of mesotherapy. Incidentally, it was not him, but the French press which coined the term "mesotherapy".
Since then, the rich and famous in Europe have long been going for mesotherapy treatments. But the trend never caught on in USA until the recent years, perhaps due to skepticism about the effectiveness of mesotherapy.
In 1987, the French Academy of Medicine finally recognized Mesotherapy as a medicine specialty. That is, doctors who specialize in administering mesotherapy treatments are now recognized as specialists.
South America also caught on mesotherapy treatments before such treatments finally became popular in the United States in the late 90's.
Today, mesotherapy is one of the fastest growing aesthetic medicine specialties.

In the previous post, we talked about misconceptions about mesotherapy treatments. Today, we delve into how mesotherapy treats cellulite. (For a brief intro to mesotherapy treatments, see the post on Mesotherapy Treatment defined.)
Cellulite affects most post-adolescent women. It is generally caused by poor blood circulation to the skin, problems with fat deposits or with the lymphatics, and weakening of the connective tissues. And it can affect any part of the body.
Mesotherapy treatments directly attack the main factors in cellulite formation, regardless of which part of the body the cellulite is affecting. One, the injection suppresses the fat in your cellulite. Two, circulation is improved; and three, the weakened connective tissues are broken down or rejuvenated. These effectively result in a significantly smoothed skin surface, with all the "dimples" and "cottage cheese formations" totally and permanently eliminated.

In the previous post, we briefly introduced mesotherapy treatments. Today, let's talk a little about common misconceptions about mesotherapy.
- Myth: Mesotherapy is a new "invention". Fact: it has been done in many parts of Europe and South America for more than 50 years.
- Myth: The fat "dissolves" away. Fact: with mesotherapy treatments, fibrous tissues are able to hold down fats more effectively, literally making the fat less bloated. It is this holding down effect that makes mesotherapy effective in sculpting and toning the body.
- Myth: Mesotherapy equals weight reduction. Fact: mesotherapy alone does not reduce the body weight - the fat is still present but it is suppressed (think squeezed). But because mesotherapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of treatment, including dieting and exercising, weight loss is often achieved through such holistic approaches.

In Greek, "meso" means "middle". Hence, some people take mesotherapy to mean the "middle path" toward losing weight.
In fact, mesotherapy is a method to suppress fat in certain parts of the body.
Mesotherapy treatments usually include injections that target fat cells. Such injections may include pharmaceutical compounds, or even natural medications (think homeopathy).
One of many ways to sculpt and tone the body, mesotherapy treatments are often associated with non-surgical cosmetic procedures to lose weight. Some people argue that you don't actually lose weight but you tend to look slim after undergoing mesotherapy treatments.
